How to Choose a Domain Name?

March 5, 2010

Domain name is your own unique identity in the web. It is a very important factor that you must always consider for it takes a big part on the success of your site. It actually represents you and of course your business. It also has a huge impact on the surfers. So you must seriously think about the name of your domain that would make a mark in the web.

Here are some of the factors that you must consider in choosing a domain name:

  • Make it short – choose a name that is short and easy to remember so that surfers will not easily forget it and they will
  • Make it DOT COM – there are many domain name extension that you can choose from. But you better prefer the used of the dot com for it is the widely used extension of the visitors.

  • Try to avoid hyphens -hyphenated names are hard to read aloud and most of the time visitors forget to type those hyphens, they get confused and enter a wrong URL.Avoid a name that you need to spell out – choose a name that is not so complicated to spell, with difficult combination’s, with numbers and other things that confused the surfer.
  • Take care not to infringe on a trademark – Any company that registers a trademark has the right to protect their trademark and has the right to notify you that your domain name is infringing upon their trademark. Why? If your domain name has the potential of confusing the public into thinking the trademark holder is somehow affiliated with your web site, they may bring infringement claims against you. The courts would have to make the decision based upon the trademark laws and if your domain name, in fact, has the potential of confusing the public.

Be guided in choosing a domain name. As what I said, it is the central identity of you and your business. Think wisely.
